10 years ago, Darren Cordova, owner and CEO of DMC Broadcasting Inc., had a vision to create a cultural celebration where families could enjoy a weekend of music, food and fun. This idea has flourished into what has come to be known as Mother’s Day Celebration. Each year, thousands of families come to Taos, NM to enjoy this unique event. The event offers two days of traditional New Mexico style music from premier artists in the NM Music scene. To offer such high quality entertainment at no cost to the public is no easy feat, but it has been accomplished the last 10 years. Each artist donates their time to perform for the 6-8 thousand fans who come to Taos to experience the event. Local businesses from Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado help make each years event possible.

Owner and CEO of DMC Broadcasting Inc., Darren Cordova, explains that each year is "a challenge to coordinate the event and to raise the needed funds to make the event what it is today." He explains that, "some years, sponsorships are not able to cover the bill, but we [DMC] cover the difference. We do it to preserve our culture as New Mexicans."

Councilor Gene Sanchez has voiced his opinion against KXMT and DMC Broadcasting's "Free To The Public" Mothers Day Celebration calling the event a "Dead Dog that cannot support itself. Sanchez has added Agenda Item 6a (Below) to discuss eliminating all funding for the event. The Town of Taos has allocated $5,000 annually to be used for the sole purpose of promoting the event. The purpose behind allocating the funds solely for advertising the event was to promote economic development via Tourism. When a large event such as Mothers Day Celebration brings thousands of fans from outside of Taos, the local economy flourishes with added "heads on beds", meals purchased and general commerce generated by the event.

KXMT friends and fans have shown their support to the Event by making each of the last 10 years a memorable experience. But now, we need your help to ensure the event can continue to provide a unique celebration of our New Mexican culture through an event that is free to the public. Call your elected officials and tell them why Mothers Day should be looked upon as a gem of Taos and not a "Dead Dog." To our friends from outside of Taos and beyond, share your experiences with the councilors and tell them why you think the event should be supported.
